Mindfulness Meditation

If you or some members of your organization would like to attend the 8 session course on Meditation and Mindfulness, there are two options:

  • your organization could engage with the instructor, Peter Black, to teach the course at the location of your organization
  • up to 3 people could take the course at the Instructor’s house in west-end Ottawa

Meditation and Mindfulness Course

If you want to learn how to take better care of yourself and discover a deeper sense of ease and peace of mind – and you are willing to actively engage in your own health and well-being – I invite you to participate in this seven-week interactive course on meditation and mindfulness. The course will give you the tools and training to enhance your health and happiness through a deep understanding of the mind-body connection, using scientifically-tested practices to mobilize your inner resources, reduce your reactivity to stressful situations, and respond to circumstances with greater awareness and presence.

This course is based on both the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program designed by Jon Kabatt-Zinn and the teachings of Culadassa (John Yates, Ph.D.) set out in The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science  (go to Culadasa.com)


Course description:

 In this course, you will:

    Become more aware of your inner life from moment to moment – your body sensations, feelings, and thoughts

    Develop a different way of relating to your sensations, thoughts and feelings through mindful acceptance rather than habitual, automatic routines

    Learn to choose the most skillful response to thoughts, feelings and situations.



    - 8 weekly 2.5 hour sessions, plus one Saturday 6 hour session. Each session incorporates theory, guided meditation practice, and discussion.

    - daily home meditation of 30 minutes


Materials Provided:

   - guided meditations - audio recordings (breath and walking meditations, yoga, body scan)

   - binder of instructions (50 pages)

Private Instruction

Private instruction is available for 1 to 3 participants, which covers almost all of the material provided in the 7-week course (see above).



Following an initial 90 minute meeting, for an orientation and interview based on a short questionnaire, the course comprises:

  • one session per week, 90 minutes long, for 8 sessions comprising:
    • - guided meditation practice
    • - instruction in meditation, how the mind works and daily mindfulness
    • - discussion of the theory and the student’s practice
  • daily half-hour meditation at home
  • reflective exercises during each week

Materials Provided:

  • guided meditation recordings for use at home (breath and walking meditations, yoga, body scan)
  • binder of instructions (50 pages)


The course of private instruction is offered at my home in Crystal Beach, a few kilometres west of Bayshore Shopping Centre (this is NOT the location shown the Contact page map, which is where the Monthly Meditation takes place) . Office hours are 4 to 7 pm, Monday to Thursday. The sessions are usually weekly, but could take place less frequently if appropriate.


$25 for the initial orientation and interview, and $100 per session ($80 if 2 students, $70 if 3 students). Payment by email (preferable) or cheque is made prior to each session.
